Inmitten der malerischen Altstadt liegt der Würzburger Marktplatz. Das ganze Jahr über finden zahlreiche Highlights statt, wie die vier saisonalen Verkaufsmessen, das einzigartige Würzburger Weindorf und andere Attraktionen.
Straßencafés und historische Sehenswürdigkeiten tragen zum einzigartigen Charakter bei, und bereiten dem Besucher unvergessene Momente.
Die Geschichte des Würzburger Marktes geht in das Jahr 1349 zurück.
Der Marktplatz war früher der Judenmarkt. Im Laufe der Zeit wurde der Markt Bauernmarkt oder auch grüner Markt genannt. 1697 wurde der Markt gepflastert. Fürst Friedrich von Schönborn (Fürstbischof von Bamberg und Bischof von Würzburg) ließ von 1739 bis 1745 den Marktplatz aufs Neue aufbauen. Die gotische Marienkapelle und das rechts daneben stehende berühmte Falkenhaus bieten heute das perfekte Ambiente zum romantischen Weihnachtsmarkt und anderen Festlichkeiten.
Ein Teil des Marktes wurde in jüngster Zeit mit einer modernen Glasdach-Markthalle versehen. Hierdurch wurden fest stehende Marktbuden geschaffen, bei welchen jeden Tag frisches Obst und Gemüse eingekauft werden können. Um sich während des Einkaufens zu stärken, wird rund um den Markt und auf dem Markt für das leibliche Wohl gesorgt.
The market square is located in the middle of the beautiful old town of Würzburg. Throughout the year, numerous highlights like the four seasonal sales fairs, the wine villages and other attractions, take place there. Cafes and historical sights contribute to the unique character and give the visitors unforgettable moments.
The history of the Würzburger Markt goes back to 1349. The historical marketplace used to be the Jewish market in Würzburg. Through the years the market altered its name to ,,Bauernmarkt“ and ,,grüner Markt“ and had many steps of rebuilding. Firstly, it was paved in 1697 and secondly, Prince Friedrich von Schönborn, Archbishop of Bamberg and Prince-Bishop of Würzburg, started to rebuild the market square from 1739 to 1745. On the market, you can spot two of Würzburg's most famous buildings. The Marienkappelle and the Falkenhaus offer the best ambience for the romantic Christmas Market and other festivities. Recently one part of the market has been provided with a modern glass-roof. Through this construction, it was able to build up small stalls, where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables. There are many stores, who take care of your well-being while you are shopping.

Marienkapelle
Die Marienkapelle ist eine römisch-katholische Kirche am Marktplatz in Würzburg. Sie wurde im 14. Jahrhundert im gotischen Stil erbaut. Bei der Bombardierung Würzburgs im Zweiten Weltkrieg ist die Kirche schwer beschädigt worden und die Flammen zerstörten ihr Inneres. In den 1950er Jahren wurde die Kirche umgebaut und 1962 neu geweiht. Bekannt ist sie vor allem durch die Skulpturen von Adam und Eva, die von Tilman Riemenschneider erbaut sind.

The Marienkapelle is a Roman-Catholic church located at the market square in Würzburg. It was built in the Gothic style in the 14th century. The church was heavily damaged during the Bombing of Würzburg in World War II and the flames destroyed its interior. In the 1950s the church was rebuilt and re-consecrated in 1962. It is best known for the sculptures of Adam and Eve, which were built by Tilman Riemenschneider.

Eins der berühmtesten Häuser Würzburgs ist das Falkenhaus. Das Falkenhaus befindet sich an der Nordseite des Oberen Markts, direkt neben der Marienkapelle. Die gelbe Außenfassade ist umfasst mit außergewöhnlicher Stuckdekoration aus weißen Stuckornamenten. Heutzutage befindet sich die Stadtbücherei Würzburgs sowie die Touristeninformation im Gebäude.
One of the most famous houses in Würzburg is the Falkenhaus, which is located on the north side of the upper market, right next to the choir of the Marienkapelle. The yellow-painted Falkenhaus stands out with its extraordinary stucco decorations of white stucco ornaments. Today the building is used as the city-library of Würzburg and as the tourist information.

Häckerbrunnen
Anlässlich des 200-jährigen Firmjubiläums des Kaufhauses Seisser in Würzburg 1973, spendete Firmeninhaber Günther Seisser der Stadt 35.000 DM für einen Brunnen im Bereich seines damaligen Geschäftshauses am Kürschnerhof. Vier Jahre hat es gedauert, bis der Häckerbrunnen, gestaltet von Richard Rother im Jahre 1977 an seinem heutigen Standort enthüllt wurde.
On the 200th Anniversary of the Seisser Department Store in 1973, the owner Günther Seisser donated 35.000 DM to the city for a fountain in the area of his former office. The Häckerbrunnen was designed and built by Richard Rother. It took four years until the fountain was unveiled in its current location in 1977.
Der Marktbrunnen, ein Obelisk wurde 1808 von J.A. Gärtner geschaffen. Die Reliefs nach antiken Vorbildern wurden von Martin Wagner, dem Sohn von Peter Wagner entworfen. Der Obelisk am Markt mit seinen Figuren erinnert an die napoleonische Zeit unter Ferdinand von der Toskana. Um ihn herum findet ein reges Markttreiben zu den vielfältigen Veranstaltungen wie der Killianimesse, der Allerheiligenmesse sowie dem Weihnachtsmarkt statt.
The market fountain represents an obelisk and was built in 1808 by J.A. Gärtner. The reliefs are based on ancient models and were designed by Martin Wagner the son of Peter Wagner. The obelisk on the market reminds of the Napoleonic period under Ferdiand of Tuscany. Around the fountain, there is a lively market with various events throughout the year such as the Killianimesse, the All Saints' Day Mass and the Christmas market.

Die Marktbärbel ist eine Brunnen-Statue direkt unter der Glaskonstruktion auf dem Neuen Markt. Die Idee die Marktbärbel als Brunnenskulptur zu verwenden, kam vom Oberbürgermeister Klaus Zeitler.
The Marktbärbel is a fountain-statue right under the modern glass-roof of the new market. The idea of depicting the symbolic figure of the Marktbärbel in a fountain sculpture came from Mayor Klaus Zeitler.
Die Figur wurde im Jahr 1974, zwecks Neugestaltung des Vorplatzes der Castell-Bank, aufgestellt. Sie war eine Stiftung der Castell-Bank und dem Besitzer Albrecht Fürst zu Castell, anlässlich des 200-jährigen Bestehens der Bank. Die Statue wurde gebaut von Otto Sonnleitner.
The statue was set up in 1974 in order to redesign the forecourt of the Castell Bank. It was a donation of the Castell-Bank and owner Albrecht Prince zu Castell on the 200th anniversary of the bank. The Statue was built by Otto Sonnleitner.

Auf dem Unteren Marktplatz finden ganzjährig der Grüne Markt und der Spezialitätenmarkt statt. Während die Messen und der Weihnachtsmarkt stattfinden, wird der Markt auf den Platz am Vierröhrenbrunnen verlegt.

The green market and the specialty market take place all year round on the lower market square. While the trade fairs and the Christmas market are taking place, the market will be moved to the square at the Vierröhrenbrunnen.
